In 2015, Saúl Luciano Lliuya filed a major climate justice lawsuit against the German energy giant RWE, demanding that the company contribute financially to reducing flood risk caused by glacial retreat in his Andean hometown. The case was declared legally admissible by German judges and is currently in the evidentiary stage. In this event, Saúl Luciano Lliuya will discuss his community’s struggle to face climate change and share his motivations for bringing a major emitter to court. This will be followed by an overview of the legal strategy, reviewing the difficulty of establishing a causal link between a single emitter and local climate change impact. We will reflect on the social and political implications of the lawsuit, followed by an open discussion.
Speakers:
- Saúl Luciano Lliuya, Plaintiff
- Noah Walker-Crawford, External Consultant on Climate Litigation
- Will Frank, Legal Consultant Germanwatch
Moderation: Monserrat Madariaga Gómez de Cuenca, University College London
