Press Conference at COP27: Presentation CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX

Together with the NewClimate Institute and the Climate Action Network (CAN International), Germanwatch will present the "Climate Change Performance Index 2023" (CCPI) at the COP 27 in Sharm el Sheikh. For the 18th time in a row, the index compares the climate protection performance of the 59 largest CO2 emitters (plus the European Union as a whole).

Principles for Just Energy Transition Partnerships in the African Energy Context

The first Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) was announced with South Africa during the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26). Immediately after the announcement, other countries came forward and demonstrated their interest in establishing JETPs. By developing guiding principles for JETPs, we aim to help JETP stakeholders establish a matrix that they can use to assess JETP selection, design, implementation, and impact, in addition to providing civil society organisations with the tools they need to engage in meaningful policy advocacy and support their respective governments in developing new JETPs.

Three recommendations on how to build a successful international green hydrogen market

The availability of green hydrogen on an industrial scale and at affordable prices will determine the prospects of industry decarbonisation. What are necessary steps for the EU and other G7 nations to speed up a successful green hydrogen market? Germanwatch and StiftungKlimawirtschaft organised a discussion between stakeholders of civil society, industry, politics, and think tanks on this topic. This blog is part of a series debunking ‘myths’ about trade-offs between climate action and development. It is intended for decision-makers, practitioners in multilateral development banks, as well as civil society and the interested public, providing them with evidence to disprove widespread misconceptions about trade-offs climate action and development. It also gives recommendations for how multilateral development banks can contribute to strengthening the link between climate action and development, thus encouraging win-win elements instead of trade-offs.

Locally Led Adaptation in the Green Climate Fund

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the largest source of adaptation funding. This Policy Brief examined the extent to which current GCF-funded projects and programmes support adaptation at the sub-national or local level in African states. It does so by using the principles of locally led adaptation as a framework through which the portfolio of the GCF is analysed, with the purpose of providing recommendations for how the GCF can better integrate these considerations in its policies and approved activities in the future, especially for its second replenishment period.

Open letter: A bold and transformative Social Climate Fund is needed, now more than ever

A reform of the emissions trading system (ETS) is currently being discussed at EU level. Proposed by the European Commission, this includes the extension of carbon pricing to the sectors of road transport and buildings, as well as the supplementary launch of a Social Climate Fund (SCF) for social compensation. In an open letter, Germanwatch, together with 37 other organizations, calls for the new ETS not to be seen as a further burden for Europeans, but as an effective response to the energy and climate crisis.

This blog series aims to debunk ‘myths’ about trade-offs between climate action and development. Addressing political decision-makers, practitioners in multilateral development banks as well as staff of civil society organisations and the interested public, three blog posts will provide them with evidence to refute widespread misconceptions about the effects of climate action on development. They will also include recommendations for multilateral development banks on how to contribute to strengthening the link between climate action and development and thereby highlight win-win opportunities and avoid trade-offs.
