Addressing Low Carbon Urban Development

Beijing, October 31, 2014 | Following-up on the round table “Strengthening the role of NGOs in China’s sustainable urban development” organised by China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO), Germanwatch and E3G in December 2013 in Beijing, this publication showcases eleven NGO projects and programmes addressing low carbon and sustainable development in cities and urban-rural areas in China.

Despite numerous regulatory and political hurdles, high profile international NGOs, domestic NGOs, local grassroots organisations, new independent think-tanks, as well as government-funded NGOs (so-called GONGOs) are working at different levels and using different approaches to promote action on climate change. Their activities vary from raising awareness within local communities to policy advocacy and providing technical assistance to government agencies. This publication, which is part of the project "Sino-European Partnership on Low Carbon and Sustainable Urban Development", aims to contribute to this debate and strengthen the EU-China civil society dialogue on issues related to sustainable development and low carbon development.
