Towards a sustainable urbanisation: Chinadialogue special edition on urbanisation

Beijing, November 18, 2013 | In collaboration with E3G – Third Generation Environmentalism, Germanwatch, the Wuppertal Institute and Stiftung Mercator, chinadialogue produced a special edition of its journal focusing on one of the biggest challenges facing China’s leaders over the next two decades: sustainable urbanisation.

Chinese society has been transformed over the past 20 years by the largest migration in human history – from rural areas to cities. How will China’s new leadership respond? What kind of cities will China build in the next decade to house an additional 250 million city dwellers by 2025? And how will they live in the cities of the future?

The special issue covers several important aspects of urbanisation in China and addresses the key questions China's leaders will have to answer over the next two decades.

“The design of China's future cities will not only affect the health and wellbeing of their residents; it will also be an important factor in the battle to contain China's soaring carbon emissions. These questions, therefore, are of high importance to all of humanity”, said chinadialogue editor Isabel Hilton.

The special edition of chinadialogue's journal on urbanisation is now available to download (see link below).
