Strengthening Indonesia–EU Alliances with Civil Society Voices

The 2024 super-election year marked a critical juncture for global partnerships, with significant developments in Indonesia and the EU. Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a key player in global climate action elected a new president amidst growing geopolitical and climate challenges. The EU, with its continued commitment to net zero transitions, unveiled the Clean Industrial Deal and introduced Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships (CTIPs) to secure essential resources for sustainable growth. However, both regions grapple with pressing concerns such as energy security, inflation, and shifting public priorities.

Indonesia's new leadership offers opportunities to enhance co-operation with the EU, particularly in energy transition and climate policy. Civil society plays a crucial role in advocating for justice-driven collaboration and inclusive approaches. Yet, challenges remain, including uneven partnership dynamics, limited progress on initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), and the need for stronger mutual trust. Aligning climate goals will be pivotal in advancing sustainable development and climate resilience.
