Engaging with the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative

Engaging with the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative
An Independent Civil Society AREI Monitoring Framework

The Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) aims to transform the African power sector by harnessing the continent’s huge, but yet largely untapped, renewable energy potential. Civil society organisations (CSOs) are an essential part of this process, as they can take on various roles to benefit the initiative.

If the civil society community lead an independent monitoring process, it can help the AREI achieve its overarching goals and contribute to the coordination and capacity building of African CSOs by collecting and dispersing information on AREI.

This paper, prepared by Germanwatch together with ACSEA, Brot für die Welt and Power Shift Africa writes about civil society engagement with AREI, proposes an independent CSO monitoring framework, and shares monitoring experiences from other civil society networks following international funds.
