A bottom-up co-creational process to develop capacities for a transition to a zero-carbon economy in Greece, Kosovo, and Serbia.
While the regions Greece, Kosovo and Serbia face common challenges like high unemployment, depopulation and brain drain – trends like decarbonisation and energy transition are supplementary hindrances. This Blog provides an assessment of the internal and external environment for each region and how the "Green Rural Deal-Project" will bridge them towards a low-to-zero-carbon development and serve as a "proof of concept" that even for the most deprived regions, the transition provides multiple benefits.

An Imperative Task for the German EU Council Presidency

Long-term stability and prosperity in the Western Balkans is closely interlinked with the fate of the EU. A positive development in the region and the maintenance of good relations are in the EU’s strategic interest. Geopolitical interests continue to compete in the Western Balkans: China is increasingly rivalling ideas of international solidarity and co-operation offered by the EU. This has become most apparent during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis that followed. The new momentum of recently extended financial support should be the starting point for a more serious cooperation with the Western Balkans on the energy transition. The German EU Presidency in the second half of this year should focus on making energy transition partnerships a reality. This is an opportunity that the EU should not miss.

Assessing the needs and attractiveness of low-carbon investments in G20 countries

Der Allianz Klima- und Energiemonitor vergleicht die G20-Staaten hinsichtlich ihrer Attraktivität für Investitionen in eine emissionsfreie Energie-Infrastruktur. Zudem berechnet er den momentanen und künftigen Investitionsbedarf – davon ausgehend, dass die Klimaziele des Pariser Abkommens, deutlich unter 2 Grad bzw. möglichst 1,5 Grad Erwärmung, eingehalten werden sollen. Der Monitor wurde zum dritten Mal von der Allianz SE in Kooperation mit Germanwatch und dem NewClimate Institute erstellt.
