FAST FORWARD 2016

Slider Fast Forward

The international year of 2015 saw an unparalleled degree of international decisions and norm creation. The Paris Agreement was a remarkable achievement. This and other international milestones such as the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals provide the framework for real advances on solving the climate crisis, in addressing development patterns that undermine global and local environmental capacities, in fighting against poverty, hunger and inequalities.

The event (in Bonn on February 16, 2016) aspired to reflect on the outcomes of the different UN policy processes of 2015 and developed concrete ways forward for implementation at different levels, and in different countries.

Discussion sessions

1: Climate Protection -  From Paris to G-20

[English]

The G20 countries are not only responsible for over 75% of global emissions, many of them also possess the financial resources and technologies needed to support other countries in their response to climate change. While last year's G7 summit produced some positive outcomes on climate - particularly the commitment to decarbonization and specific initiatives to support poor countries - the G20 outcomes remained vague. Yet, action by the G20 will be crucial to turn the objectives of the Paris Agreement into reality. The current Chinese presidency of the G20 has already announced a focus on 'green finance' and the German presidency in 2017 might be interested in pursuing the decarbonization agenda further. This session will bring together experts from some G20 countries to discuss: What are the most important outcomes the G20 countries need to commit to? How can we ensure that past commitments of the G7 and G20 are implemented? How can the voices of vulnerable people and civil society be heard more strongly at the G20?

  • Lina Li, Chinese Climate Expert - adelphi
  • Srinivas Krishnaswamy, CEO, Vasudha Foundation (video)
  • Alexander Ochs, Senior Director of Climate and Energy,  Worldwatch Institute

Moderation: Lutz Weischer, Germanwatch

2: From processes to action: increase your Hand Print

[German]

While sustainable development agendas need to find their way into national implementation, the necessity of ambitious action for transformation is clearly increasing. This session focuses on the role of individuals and groups as change makers in society who effectively change long-lasting structures. Participants discuss the transformative power of their actions following the motto 'decrease your footprint, increase your Hand Print'.

Moderation: Alexander Reif, Germanwatch

3: SDG agenda at international and national level

[English]

The new SDG agenda is universal and comprehensive.  While this is necessary to govern the sustainability nexus, it is also critiqued for its broadness and lack of focus. The discussion will sketch out essential steps to implement and strengthen the SDG Agenda in the coming years including a focus on SDG implementation in Germany.

  • Lina Dabbagh, Post-2015 Policy Officer, Climate Action Network
  • Adolf  Kloke-Lesch, Director  - German Chapter of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network

Moderation: Klaus Milke, Chairman of Germanwatch

4: New ways to manage climate impacts

[English]

After Paris, new ways to manage climate impacts are possible. In the process of adaptation and addressing loss and damage, climate vulnerable people are not helpless, affected communities take action to safeguard their rights. At the same time, the responsibility of emitters continues to grow. How is the climate adaptation and resilience agenda developing in the next years?

  • Red Constantino, The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities Philippines (video)
  • Indi Mclymont - Lafayette, Country Coordinator Jamaica, Panos Caribbean
  • Sven Harmeling, Climate  Change Advocacy Coordinator, Care International

Moderation: Britta Horstmann, Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)

5: A coal consensus for Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia

[German]

After Paris the next step in national climate policy is to define the pathway to Germany's long term goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 95% by 2050 and to achieve decarbonization. For this to be realistically achievable, complete coal phase-out in Germany has to be achieved by 2035, latest 2040. One of the main coal regions in Europe - North Rhine-Westphalia - must start to take a lead. How to manage the transition and what local stories have global relevance?

  • Stefanie Langkamp, Leiterin Kohle- und Energiepolitik, Klima-Allianz
  • Philipp Litz, Referent Klimaschutz, Agora Energiewende
  • Anika Uhlemann, VKU, Fachgebietsleiterin Strommarktdesign und Klimapolitik

Moderation: Jan Burck, Germanwatch

6: Education for sustainable development as a means for transformation

[German]

The Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) clearly emphasizes "the potential of ESD to empower learners to transform themselves and the society they live in" (UNESCO's Aichi-Nagoya declaration, 2014). Participants discuss the potential and crucial leverage points within ESD to achieve transformation in the context of the SDGs and the Paris' climate agreement, by bringing ESD into all learning and training processes.

  • Adriana Valenzuela, UNFCCC Secretariat, Art. 6
  • Eberhard Neugebohrn, Stiftung Umwelt und Entwicklung Nordrhein-Westfalen
  • Thomas Hohn, Greenpeace / Bündnis ZukunftsBildung

Moderation: Stefan Rostock, Germanwatch
